Sepsis (blood poisoning) is a life threatening illness reflecting the body’s release of inflammatory cytokines in response to the presence of bacterial and/or fungal pathogens in the bloodstream.


Sepsis is the leading cause of death in US hospitals. Mortality from sepsis increases at a rate of 8% for every hour that a patient is not receiving appropriate antimicrobial therapy as 70% of bacterial infections are resistant to at least one antibiotic. The incidence of sepsis is increasing, with an estimated 25 million cases globally in 2013, up from 18 million a few years ago. It is estimated that 40 million tests for sepsis are now performed per year in the US alone. At £100 per test, this is a >£4 billion market.

Prompt treatment with the correct antibiotics will not only save tens of thousands of lives it will save billions of pounds to healthcare providers. Correct treatment reduces a patient’s stay in ICU by an average of 11 days saving over £25,000. Thus there is a massive demand for an effective test.
